Sikorsky to Build
and Test X2 Technology Demonstrator Helicopter
24-06-2005
Sikorsky Aircraft today announced
plans to build and test a demonstrator for a new class of
coaxial X2 Technology helicopters that maintain or improve
on all the vertical flight capabilities of rotorcraft and
whose high speed configuration will cruise at 250 knots.

Sikorsky plans to build and
fly its X2 Technology demonstrator helicopter at its Schweizer
Aircraft subsidiary by the end of 2006. Preliminary design
work for the demonstrator is finished and parts fabrication
for the aircraft has commenced.
X2 Technology refers to a suite
of technologies Sikorsky will apply to achieve new levels
of speed and performance in coaxial helicopters. Coaxial helicopters
feature two counter-rotating rotors on the same vertical axis.
The announcement came at the
American Helicopter Society International's annual technical
forum in Grapevine, Texas, where Sikorsky unveiled new scale
models of X2 Technology helicopter concepts in various weight
classes and configurations.
"We initiated X2 Technology
convinced that the most productive and flexible helicopter
is a helicopter which is capable of a significant increase
in speed," said Sikorsky President Stephen Finger. "Customers
are demanding greater speed but without sacrificing any of
the unique capabilities that make helicopters the ideal platform
for countless civil and military missions."
X2 Technology aircraft will
hover, land vertically, maneuver at low speeds, and transition
seamlessly from hover to forward flight like a helicopter.
In a high speed configuration, one or more 'pusher props'
are part of an integrated auxiliary propulsion system to enable
high speed with no need to physically reconfigure the aircraft
in flight.
The top cruise speed of helicopters
in service today, roughly 150 to 170 knots, are only incrementally
better than what they were decades ago due to the fundamental
limits of conventional rotor systems.
Previous attempts to develop
faster helicopters have resulted in degraded hover performance.
Likewise, attempts at fixed wing or hybrid vertical lift aircraft
have resulted in aircraft with less hover capability than
helicopters.
Sikorsky selected the term X2
Technology in order to: describe a class of helicopters with
a coaxial design and to describe the multiplying effects (2X,
or times 2) of applying a suite of modern technologies to
coaxial helicopters. These technologies include new rotor
blade designs, advanced flight control laws, transmissions
with greater horsepower to weight performance and the ability
to seamlessly transfer power from the main rotor to the aft
propulser, and active vibration control.
Sikorsky will also incorporate
decades of company research and development into X2 Technology
helicopters, including: the XH-59A Advancing Blade Concept
Demonstrator which showed high speed was possible with a coaxial
helicopter and auxiliary propulsion, the Cypher UAV which
expanded company knowledge of the unique aspects of flight
control laws in a fly by wire aircraft that employed coaxial
rotors and the RAH-66 COMANCHE, which developed expertise
in composite rotors and advanced transmission design.

Schweizer Delivers
new 333 to San Antonio Police Department
03-06-2005
Heli-Expo 2005 - Anaheim, California
-- Schweizer Aircraft Corp£®recently delivered a new Model
333 turbine-powered helicopter to the San Antonio Police Department
Helicopter Detail.
San Antonio¡¯s new Schweizer
helicopter is equipped with the 333¡¯s uprated takeoff power.
This boost in horsepower significantly increases the 333¡¯s
hover capacity as well as take-off and rate-of-climb performance.
The new power increase, coupled with the derated engine installation
on the 333 provides exceptional mission performance in high
and hot environments.
In 1997 San Antonio took delivery
of the first two of four Schweizer 330SPs, which have since
been upgraded to 333¡¯s. Operating an average of 2100 hours
per year san Antonio Police Department uses their 333 's to
perform: routine patrol, searches for suspects and missing
persons, aerial photography£¬covert surveillance and command
and control operations.
According to San Antonio Police
Department Sgt. Paltrick C. McNamara III, ¡°When the San Antonio
Police Department Helicopter Detail made the decision to purchase
Schweizer 333¡¯s in 1997 and again 2000, the 333 was evaluated
against other single engine turbine helicopters. We have found
the 333 to be an ideal aircraft for their airborne law enforcement
patrol role, both for its ability to perform the mission and
do so at a lower cost than any other turbine helicopter in
its class. The 333 is well liked by the pilots and observers
in our unit. It is comfortable, non-fatiguing and easy to
fly. There is plenty of room in the cockpit for our installed
and carry on equipment while still providing room to operate
freely. Maintainability and product support were key factors
in San Antonio Police Department¡¯s selection of the new helicopters.
The Schweizer 333¡¯s life limited components have high service
lives. The 333 is easily accessible for routine inspections
and maintenance; and best of all, the product support from
Schweizer has been excellent. We will continue to select the
Schweizer 333 for our police patrol helicopter.¡±

Sikorsky
has big plans for Schweizer subsidiary
07-03-2005
Now carrying a backlog of 73
helicopters, Schweizer can usually promise delivery only within
a yeat-not good enough. ¡°Most people can wait about two or
three months,¡± said Schweizer. ¡°We¡¯re just not supporting
customers as well as we should. That¡¯s gong to change.¡±
Instead, in its new role as
a Sikorsky subsidiary, Schweizer plans to double sales within
three of four years, all the while cutting the waiting time
on a delivery to three months. ¡°We¡¯re going to really have
to focus on long-lead-time components,¡± said Schweizer. ¡°We
have to make sure the inventory is there.¡±
This year¡¯s schedules place
production at 77 helicopters, including fifty-five 300CBi,
twelve 300C and ten 333. By next year, it plans to double
that rate.
If that seems like a tall order,
Sikorsky vice president Paul Martin said that the ¡°lean¡± manufacturing
processes his company practices will help Schweizer meet its
goal without the need to add headcount. He also said that
Sikorsky plans to invest heavily in its new subsidiary, and
that it¡¯s serious about keeping its promise not to burden
Schwiezer with bureaucracy.
Under the new arrangement, Sikorsky
plans to involve Schweizer heavily in research and development,
giving the company a fifth ¡°core business.¡± Borrowing half
a phrase from his days at Lockheed, Martine referred to Schweizer
as Sirkorsky¡¯s ¡°Hawk Works.¡± ¡°You¡¯ll be seeing some dramatic
announceme4nts,¡± said the Sikorsky v-p.
In the civil realm, Schweizer
is delivering a new 300C to West Jordan, Utah-based High Desert
Helicopters here this week. Other recent developments include
the sale of ten 300CBi models to UK distributor Caseright.
So far, Caseright has delivered four Schweizer 333 turbine-powered
models to UK customers.

Turkey Signs for Head-of-State
Sikorsky S-92
22-12-2004
STRATFORD, Conn - The Turkish government has signed a contract
for a Sikorsky S-92 helicopter to serve head-of-state missions.
Turkey joins Turkmenistan in selecting
the S-92 as its head-of-state helicopter. Turkmenistan is
buying two aircraft. To date, Sikorsky has orders, including
options, for more than 60 S-92 helicopters, making it the
most successful commercial launch in the company's history.
Sikorsky has been contracted by the
Government of Canada to provide 28 military H-92 derivatives.
The S-92 is also becoming popular candidate for head-of-state
aircraft, with a version of the H-92 under consideration
for the next-generation helicopter to serve the White House
mission.
"This further solidifies Turkey's relationship
with our company," said Joseph Gigantelli, regional vice
president for Sikorsky. "We are pleased with the confidence
Turkey has shown in our products." Turkey operates S-70
BLACK HAWK and SEAHAWK helicopters.
The S-92 provides unprecedented levels

Sikorsky Inaugurates Executive
Transport Center
---FACILITY PREPARED FOR MANUFACTURING NEW PRESIDENTIAL
HELICOPTER
08-12-2004
STRATFORD, Conn., - Touting its mission readiness to build
the next Marine One fleet, Sikorsky Aircraft today unveiled
its new Executive Transport Center, which will serve exclusively
as the final assembly facility for the new presidential
helicopter should the company win the contract.
"Over the past several months, we've
made the investment to prepare this secured, state-of-the-art
presidential helicopter manufacturing facility," Sikorsky
President Stephen Finger told hundreds of employees attending
the ribbon-cutting along with U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays,
R-Connecticut. "I am proud to say we are ready. We are ready
to begin work on the next presidential helicopter today,"
Finger said.
The Executive Transport Center is located
within Sikorsky's main facility, secluded from other sections
of the plant so that strict security can be maintained once
work begins on the next presidential helicopter.
"In fact, we are the only team able
to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in the actual facility
where we plan to assemble the next presidential helicopter,"
Finger said.
Sikorsky has offered the H-92 in its
bid to win the VXX competition, the government designation
for the program to provide the next fleet of Marine One
helicopters. The H-92 is based on Sikorsky's S-92, the world's
newest medium-lift helicopter and the only helicopter that
meets the FAA's latest, most stringent safety requirements.
"We started preparing for the next generation of Marine
One helicopters more than a decade ago when our company
invested our own money in the S-92." Finger said. "No one
else has a helicopter that meets those same safety standards.
The competition's helicopter was designed in the 1980s.
Does anyone think it makes sense to build the next presidential
helicopter to last generation's safety standards?"
Sikorsky has built and maintained
every presidential helicopter since Eisenhower. "Sikorsky
has delivered over 9000 helicopters with over 90 million
flights hours," Finger said.
Sikorsky has assembled six US-based
companies on the All American Team to provide the H-92 for
presidential service. All seven companies have presidential
flight mission experience either with Marine One or Air
Force One. This means that the All American Team already
has personnel with the high level government security clearances
required to work on presidential aircraft. The All American
Team includes:
Sikorsky Aircraft, of Stratford, Connecticut,
will lead the team and serve as the prime system integrator,
including aircraft and system design, component manufacturing,
final assembly and in-service support.
FlightSafety International, of New
York, New York, will provide simulation and training equipment.
L-3 Communications Integrated Systems,
headquartered in Greenville, Texas, will provide mission
communications systems and the aircraft interior furnishings.
Northrop Grumman, Rolling Meadows, Illinois and San Jose,
California, will provide aircraft survivability systems.
Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
will provide major cockpit systems.
Vought Aircraft Industries, Dallas,
Texas, will provide integrated aero structures.
General Electric Aircraft engines, of Lynn, Massachusetts,
will supply its CT7-8C engine.
Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, based
in Stratford, Conn., is a world leader in the design, manufacture
and service of advanced helicopters for commercial, industrial
and military uses. Sikorsky helicopters occupy a prominent
position in the intermediate to heavy range of 5,300 kg
to 33,000 kg gross weight. They are flown by all five branches
of the United States armed forces, along with military services
and commercial operators in more than 40 nations.

PIPELINE COPTER GUARDS TAKE
OFF (03-12-2004)
Greg Wright
Deputy Business Editor
A HELICOPTER fleet based in Yorkshire will soon protect
most of Britain's gas supply from vandalism, sabotage and
accidental damage.
Total Air Management Services (TAMS) is spending £2.5m
on four helicopters which will patrol Britain's gas pipelines
to ensure the supply is never interrupted.
The company already provides pilots
to monitor electricity power lines.
The fleet has been bought with help
from an £800,000 investment by the South Yorkshire
Investment Fund (SYIF), and should start its patrol duties
on behalf of gas pipeline company Transco early next year.
The fleet of four Schweizer 333 helicopters will be built
in New York.
TAMS was launched in 2001 by two former
South Yorkshire Police helicopter pilots, John Tickner and
Mike Crichton-Kane.
The company leases aircraft and provides
helicopter pilots along with engineering, technical and
training services to a range of public bodies and utility
companies, including South Yorkshire Police.
It specializes in carrying out laser
mapping work for major utilities using equipment mounted
on helicopters.
Mick Cooper, the company's flight operation
manager, said the Transco deal covered the whole of Britain's
gas pipeline network. The pipelines can be checked much
more quickly from the sky, he added.
"It can take three to four times as
long to cover an area on foot," he said. "They have to go
to very inhospitable areas. If it wasn't for this type of
work being done you couldn't ensure the supply was working.
Damage can be caused quite accidentally.
"Farmers might be digging and not aware
there was a pipeline there."
Transco's network provides more than 40 per cent of Britain's
energy needs. The Warwick-based company's network is made
up of more than 170,000 miles of pipeline.

Helicopter Adventures
order 23 Schweizer 300CBi's, plus options for 10 more
10-7-2004
Elmira, New York¡ Schweizer Aircraft Corp. is pleased to announce
the signing of a contract with Helicopter Adventures Inc.
(HAI) for the largest single fleet order of 300CBi helicopters
to date. Helicopter Adventures is the largest commercial helicopter
flight training school in the world. The order is for twenty-three
(23) 300CBi helicopters with options for up to ten additional
units.
Helicopter Adventures was the lead customer for the 300CB
in 1995. Separate from the current contract, HAI has purchased
50 Schweizer helicopters over the past nine years. Helicopter
Adventures is also a Schweizer Sales and Service Center with
flight training operations in both Titusville, Florida and
Concord, California.
According to Paul Schweizer, president,¡± We are extremely
pleased to be manufacturing a new fleet of CBi¡¯s for Helicopter
Adventures. In 1995 after rigorously evaluating the 300CB
and comparing it with other helicopters on the market, Helicopter
Adventures made the switch to a predominantly Schweizer fleet.
Nine years later they continue to be the largest commercial
helicopter training school in the world and are in the process
of expanding their operations even more. That speaks volumes
for the message we are hearing from around the world...that
the 300CB/CBi is the best flight training helicopter on the
market.¡±
Since taking delivery of the initial 300CB in 1995, Helicopter
Adventures has logged approximately 130,000 hours on their
300CB/CBi fleet with no injury accidents. When asked for his
opinion why the 300CBi is so well suited for flight training,
Patrick Corr, president of Helicopter Adventures stated, ¡°The
stability of the 300CBi, its benign and predictable flight
characteristics, and its conventional controls make it a wonderful
tool for flight instruction. My company is four times larger
than it was when we bought the first 300CB in 1995 and I"m
in no doubt that our success is largely attributable to that
decision. Our customers really appreciate the fact that we
invest in the best training helicopters on the market today.
It¡¯s an added bonus that in the long run these aircraft actually
work out to be the best value for the operator too."
A consortium of banks is providing financing for the new fleet
of 300CBi helicopters. Matthew Parlier, vice president of
Valley Commercial Capital, coordinated the loan program with
two additional banks: Scope Aircraft Finance and Center Capital
Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Webster Financial
Corporation.
The Schweizer 300CBi received FAA certification in 2002 as
an enhanced version of the company¡¯s 300CB. It features a
number of improvements including a fuel injected engine, overhaul/retirement
components with time/life limits no less than 4000 hours and
Schweizer"s STAR system which includes a start-up overspeed
limiter, automatic rotor engagement and a low rotor RPM warning
device. Combined, these enhancements provide simplified operating
procedures, reduced operating costs and further safety advancements.
The standard equipped 300CBi includes these features in addition
to dual controls, comm. transceiver, transponder, blind encoder,
night-lights and many other standard features.
In addition to the Model 300CBi helicopter Schweizer Aircraft
Corp. manufactures the 300C and 333, the Fire Scout unmanned
helicopter, the SA 2-37B and RU-38B surveillance airplanes,
and an extensive range of major components and airframes under
subcontract to the U.S. aerospace industry including companies
such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Sikorsky,
and the U.S. Government. Schweizer sells and supports its
aircraft through a worldwide network of sales and service
centers.

Schweizer
333(S-333) Becoming Light Utility Helicopter of Choice
06-06-2004
Elmira, New York The Schweizer Model 333(S-333) continues
to prove itself as the ideal helicopter for powerline and
pipeline patrol.
Schweizer Sales and Service
Center, Chesapeake Bay Helicopters, recently took delivery
of a Model 333(S-333), for which they have received a contract
to perform power line inspection and LIDAR (Light Ranging
and Detection) surveys. The helicopter will be configured
specifically for this role.
Chesapeakes powerline operations will be conducted using gyro
stabilized Poly-Tech infra-red and Daycor Corona cameras.
The LIDAR system is a Litemapper 2800 and will be used to
measure the amount of powerline sag under various weather
and load conditions. The information gained from these patrol
flights will assist the power company in determining the amount
of increased voltage that the powerline can accept and still
maintain proper line clearance between the powerline and other
obstacles. The LIDAR system will also be utilized for aerial
survey missions, powerline and pipeline planning and density
studies, topographical surveys and coastline erosion studies.
The aircraft will mainly be operated in the eastern U.S, although
specific operations may be conducted in other parts of the
country. Chesapeake plans to operate the 333(S-333) a minimum
of 45 hours per month.
When asked for his comments on acquiring a 333(S-333) for
this specified patrol role Wilson Gilliam, President of Chesapeake
Bay Helicopters, stated, The 333(S-333) has a wide center
of gravity envelope, which permits a great deal of flexibility
in equipment placement. The spacious cockpit is perfect for
mounting LCD screens and supplemental equipment. The 333(S-333)s
low vibration rotor system is well suited for our sensitive
equipment because lower vibration levels equate to less maintenance
on camera mounts and gimbal features. Although the customer
was originally considering other helicopters, the 333(S-333)s
low direct operating costs, stability and proven safety features
convinced them that it is the right helicopter for the job.
We are able to offer the 333(S-333) to our customers for
about 20% less than other comparable single engine turbine
helicopters.
Another Model 333(S-333) operator in Wisconsin has seen similar
success with a 333(S-333), which they have been operating
since early 2003. Aero Optics Inc. located in East Troy, Wisconsin
uses their 333(S-333) for a variety of airborne missions
including powerline patrol, pipeline patrol, wildlife surveys,
video and still photography. They operate the 333(S-333)
an average of 225 hours per year.
Don Voland, President of Aero Optics stated, The 333(S-333)
is an ideal aircraft for patrol and survey work because of
the seating arrangement which allows all observers to have
an unobstructed view both forward and to both sides. The wildlife
survey observers we fly have given the 333(S-333) seating
arrangement very high marks for visibility and comfort. The
low operating costs per hour and reserve power are also major
factors which make it stand out from other single turbine
helicopters. Aero Optics experience is an example of how customers
and operators alike benefit from the 333(S-333)s low direct
operating costs, unique cockpit configuration and rugged dependability.
The proven 333(S-333) operates throughout the world in many
demanding roles including law enforcement patrol, powerline/pipeline
patrol, commercial and military flight training, ranching,
external load operations, animal surveys, aerial photography
and personal transportation. The spacious cockpit, generous
useful load, impressive performance, robust design and low
direct operating costs make the 333(S-333) first in its class.
Shanghai Sikorsky manufactures and sales 333(S-333), 300C(S-300C)
and 300CBi(S-300CBI) helicopters with providing the support
and service in China.

Mexico Orders
Five Schweizer 333's
February 18, 2004
Elmira, New York¡ Schweizer Aircraft Corp. has been awarded
a contract to manufacture five Model 333 helicopters for Mexico.
The helicopters, all slated for delivery in 2004, will be
delivered to the Mexican Procuraduria General de la Rep¨²blica
(PGR), Agencia General de Investigaci¨®n (AFI). The new 333's
will perform airborne law enforcement and surveillance missions
including border patrol, drug enforcement and interdiction.
Paul Schweizer stated, "The 333 was selected over its competitors
because of the helicopter's outstanding performance in the
airborne patrol role. Every day 333 helicopters fly critical
missions with law enforcement and military groups. A combination
of exceptional performance, rugged dependability, and low
direct operating costs make the 333 the ideal aircraft for
border patrol and law enforcement missions."
All five helicopters will be equipped with the 333's recently
certified uprated takeoff horsepower. Take-off horsepower
was increased from 252 to 280 shp. This boost in horsepower
significantly increases the 333's hover capacity as well as
take-off and rate-of-climb performance. Hover in-ground effect
and hover out-of-ground effect ceilings are increased by approximately
3000 and 6000 feet, respectively. The new power increase,
coupled with the derated engine installation on the 333 combine
to provide exceptional mission performance in high and hot
environments.
Each aircraft will be outfitted with a full avionics and equipment
package for the patrol mission including a night vision compatible
cockpit and Wescam 12DS200 electro optical/infrared sensor.
Designed to perform airborne law enforcement missions, the
12DS200 will provide the PGR with "high-performance detection,
recognition, identification and tracking of persons and vehicles
over long distances in daylight, in total darkness, and in
less-than-ideal weather conditions."
Powered by a Rolls-Royce 250-C20W, the rugged 333 operates
throughout the world in many demanding roles including law
enforcement and military patrol, powerline/pipeline patrol,
commercial and military flight training, ranching, external
load operations, animal surveys, aerial photography and personal
transportation. The spacious cockpit, generous useful load,
impressive performance, robust design and low direct operating
costs make the 333 first in its class.
In addition to the Model 333 helicopter Schweizer Aircraft
Corp. manufactures the 300C and 300CBi, the Fire Scout unmanned
helicopter, the SA 2-37B and RU-38B surveillance airplanes,
and an extensive range of major components and airframes under
subcontract to the U.S. aerospace industry including companies
such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Sikorsky,
and the U.S. Government. Schweizer sells and supports its
aircraft through a worldwide network of sales and service
centers.

History of Sikorsky in
China-Chinese helicopter teaching with R-6 helicopter
26-03-2003
China imported Black Hawk helicopter provided by Sikorsky
Aircraft Corp in 1983. This model had been regarded as the
first entrance of Sikorsky to China until 2001. However, the
memory of Mr. Guo Zhihong, one of helicopter pioneers in new
China, pushes this date 25 years earlier and brings out the
unknown past.
This R-6 helicopter left in
mainland by Kuomintang before liberation of China contributed
to the generation of helicopter pioneers in new China and
developing first helicopter made in China-Yan'an2. This R-6
is the only teaching aid of early helicopter undergraduates
in China since 1958. R-6 helicopter played an important role
in original period of helicopter specialty in China.
